The Origin of Dia di Rincon: A Tribute to Heritage

We are guests of Dientje Helmijr and her husband Robby Winklaar at the kunuku of her late mother, Dolores Helmijr-Marsera, to learn more about Dia di Rincon and the origins of this festive event. Dientje warmly welcomes us: "Welcome! Please, have a seat. Would you like something to drink? Have you eaten yet?"

As we chat comfortably, we sit next to a charismatic, dignified man with a deep voice. "Pleased to meet you, I'm George," he says with a smile. We look at the emblem on his shirt and realize that this is George "Kultura" Thodé, from KADIMO (Kanadó di Mondi = Forest Ranger)!

The kunuku La Toma of "Miss Jooi," as Dolores was known to the local people, is located in Playa Grandi, near the entrance of Washington Slagbaai National Park in Rincon. Here, corn, okra, and watermelon were cultivated in the past, but it was also the place for parties, domino tournaments, and cultural activities. It's the perfect setting to talk about the origin of Dia di Rincon!

Deep Roots

Dia di Rincon is a beloved festival on Bonaire with a rich history dating back to the oldest settlement on our island, Rincon. It originated from a deeply rooted need to honor and protect the culture and heritage of Rincon. Every year on April 30th, people come together for joyful parades, traditional dances, and delicious local dishes.

George Thodé, also known as "Kultura," embodies the spirit of Dia di Rincon. For over 43 years, he has worked as Chief Ranger at Stinapa, the organization that manages the island's national parks. His dedication to the nature and culture of our island has had a lasting impact on the celebration of Rincon Day.

The First Celebration

The story of Dia di Rincon began in 1988 when a group of local community members, including George Thodé and Broertje Janga, founded the festival to highlight the unique culture, history, and traditions of Rincon. The first celebration took place a year later, on April 30, 1989, after intensive research and documentation of Rincon's heritage. The festival quickly grew to become a highlight of social life on Bonaire, where people of all backgrounds come together to celebrate Rincon's rich legacy. Since 2020, it has even become an official public holiday, with multi-day activities that attract people from across the Kingdom and beyond.

Cultural Message for the Future of (Dia di) Rincon

George and Dientje aim to keep the message of Dia di Rincon alive and to invest in the growth of Rincon itself. Undoubtedly, they also see challenges that can only be overcome by informing and uniting the new generations. George considers the establishment of Dia di Rincon as an important step in the right direction. "We must be proud of our own culture and realize that it is invaluable." He believes that collaboration and action are essential for growth and improvement.

In addition to her plans to keep Rincon's cultural heritage alive, Dientje wants to revive her mother's kunuku by organizing events such as family gatherings and providing activities for the elderly. She is also working behind the scenes on other initiatives to contribute to the preservation of Rincon and Bonaire's cultural heritage in her own way. An example of this is a recently formed committee, of which "Kultura" is also a member, to revive the kunukus of the village of Playa Grandi and the Dam Grandi (the large dam) in collaboration with the local families and farmers there.

Both advocates would prefer to see even more attention given to Bonairean cultural heritage in our schools by incorporating it into the curriculum annually.
