Aside from diving, Bonaire has also made a name for itself as a world-renowned destination for windsurfing. The beautiful lagoon of Sorobon, Lac Bay is a prime spot for this high-adrenaline sport. Lac Bay has been declared a protected marine park and adheres to the marine park rules and regulations. This ensures that the area will remain as beautiful and pristine as it is today, for many years to come.
The Island and Seasons
The main draws of Bonaire's reputation as the best windsurfing spot are it's geographic location and weather conditions. The island has steady trade winds almost year-round and shallow flat waters which create the ideal windsurfing environment. Bonaire has two seasons for windsurfing. From December through August which is referred to as high-wind season and September to the middle of December which referred to as light-wind season. The winds that blow across the island's eight square kilometers create three distinct zones in the bay which are each perfectly suited to particular skill levels of windsurfing.
First-timer? No problem!
Bonaire is a great place to learn for first-time windsurfers. Beginners are usually found in the beachside of Lac Bay as the shallow waters in this area make for easy recovery during falls while the barrier reef guarantees smooth-water sailing.
Experienced? Awesome!
The intermediate and expert level windsurfers usually practice the sport in Lac's outer edges where mast-high swells of the Caribbean sea can be experienced to its extent and adrenaline junkies can enjoy the sport to its fullest potential.
There is a selection of windsurfing schools located all over Lac Bay. You can rent windsurf gear and equipment as well as acquire lessons depending on your confidence in the water and skill level at Jibe City Windsurfing School.
